Buku Abel #1 is a remarkable natural-processed coffee from the highlands of Guji, Ethiopia, produced at the Buku Abel Washing Station. Situated at an altitude of 1900–2100 meters above sea level, the station benefits from rich red soil, cool mountain winds, and excellent sun exposure—conditions that support slow cherry maturation and vibrant cup quality. Around 500 smallholder farmers from the surrounding area contribute cherries to this lot, typically delivering their harvest around midday for meticulous hand-sorting and sundrying on raised African beds.
This specific lot falls into the “Diima” flavour profile, a categorisation system developed by Nordic Approach to better communicate the tasting experience of Ethiopian coffees. “Diima,” meaning “red” in Oromiffa, signals a bold and lively flavour character. The cup bursts with tropical and candy-like fruit notes—think mango, banana, blueberry, and blackcurrant—rounded out with violet florals and a deep, winey sweetness. With a cupping score of 87.5, this coffee offers bright acidity, juicy structure, and a clean, sweet finish.
Exported by Highland Coffee Development (HCD), a company founded by brothers Ermias and Ephrem Eshetu in 2018, this coffee reflects both quality craftsmanship and a strong cultural heritage. Grown primarily from heirloom varieties in semi-forest and garden-style farms, the cherries yield complex, expressive flavours that showcase the unique terroir of Hambela. Buku Abel #1 is a compelling choice for anyone seeking a vibrant, fruit-forward Ethiopian coffee with clear traceability and artisanal care behind it.
