La Colina, meaning “The Hill”, is a family heritage farm in Chimaltenango, Antigua, Guatemala. The name was chosen by Tony Medina’s father, inspired by the hilly elevations where the farm lies. Antonio, known as Tony, inherited the land as part of his father’s legacy, and though he initially grew corn and beans, his true dream was always to cultivate coffee. From a young age, he worked on different coffee farms, learning the craft and gaining the experience that would later allow him to turn his vision into reality. In 1991, Tony planted his very first coffee tree, marking the beginning of what has since become his life’s work.
Over the years, Tony expanded La Colina with patience and perseverance, steadily increasing both the number of trees and the farm’s production. Today, after more than 25 years, he reflects with pride that his youthful dream has fully come true. The farm now spans 179 hectares, producing around 4,000 kilograms of coffee annually. His journey stands as a testament to dedication, resilience, and a deep-rooted passion for coffee cultivation.
The farm’s terroir plays a key role in the cup profile of its coffee. Sitting at 1,700 meters above sea level, La Colina benefits from fertile clay soils, steady rainfall of around 1,400 mm, and a mild temperature range of 16–23 °C. Inga shade trees provide natural protection and biodiversity, while traditional varieties like Caturra and Bourbon thrive under washed processing. These conditions create a balanced, clean, and nuanced coffee that reflects both the unique environment of Antigua and Tony’s unwavering commitment to quality.
