Kibingo - Burundi

Nestled in the picturesque hills of Kayanza commune in northern Burundi lies the renowned Kibingo washing station, a hub of excellence in coffee processing. Situated at an altitude of 1,893 meters above sea level, Kibingo serves as the heart of a vibrant coffee-growing community, where 3,515 dedicated farmers cultivate their cherished Red Bourbon coffee trees.

At Kibingo, quality is paramount. Every step of the coffee journey, from cherry to bean, is meticulously monitored and perfected. The farmers, organized into groups of 30 under the guidance of farm leaders, handpick only the ripest cherries from their small plots, ensuring utmost care and attention to detail.

Upon delivery, the cherries undergo a rigorous quality assessment. Wet-processing begins promptly, with pulping, fermentation, and washing meticulously supervised. Trained agronomists oversee the process, ensuring each batch reaches its full potential.

Following fermentation, the beans are carefully graded according to density, with seven distinct grades ensuring only the finest beans progress. The parchment, bearing traceability tags for each lot, is then laid out on drying tables, where it basks in the gentle sunlight, meticulously turned and monitored until perfection is achieved.

This dedication to excellence extends beyond the processing stage. Kibingo actively supports its farmers through initiatives such as seedling provision and organic fertilizer distribution, fostering sustainable practices and ensuring the longevity of Burundi's coffee tradition.
