La Joya – Costa Rica
forest honey, cranberries, cocoa
Julian and his brother Bayron are the newest generation of producers coming out of San Pablo, 21 and 23 years old respectively, they are the 5th generation of coffee farmers in the family. These guys are super passionate about coffee at every step from seed to cup. Their father, Ronald, who has been a farmer his whole life, sells some of his produce at the local farmers market in the San Marcos park. The boys worked the stand every weekend and came up with the idea to start selling their own roasted coffee. So, their dad helped them by providing his coffee fruit and Julian and Byron processed a few bags of coffee for themselves to roast.
They have been very involved in the micro mill operation and continue to go deeper into their passion for coffee ever since. Julian, Byron, and their family-focused even more on La Joya micro mill 6 years ago due to the low market prices they were receiving for delivering just their fruit. Their goal is to add value to their product and to produce the best quality possible. It’s of the utmost importance for them to work the farm as sustainable as possible.
